"Step By Step" is the fifth episode of the first season of That '90s Show.
Synopsis[]
Ozzie's efforts to set up Kitty's new computer put Leia in an awkward position. An ad for a free jacuzzi lands Nate and Jay in hot water.
Plot[]
Kitty is excited that Red and her are getting a computer, as Ozzie helps them set it up. Red is not as excited because he prefers reading the newspaper.
Nik tells Nate that a hot tub would be disgusting because it is contaminated, but he says that it is free. Gwen teases him over the fact that he cannot grow a moustache and Nate insists on getting the tub and mentions that they need to talk about their relationship. Jay sarcastically tells Leia that he loves just being friends, as Gwen tells Leia that what she did work. After that, Nate and Jay go to get the hot tub.
Ozzie makes himself a sandwich as Leia comes upstairs and tells him he does not need to help her grandparents with installing their computer. However, Ozzie says it is part of a bigger plan which would be coming out to her grandmother.
Leia asks Ozzie why he wanted to come out to her grandmother, to which he replies that she is step seven in his 16 step plan, which would end up being his parents. The previous step had been coming out to strangers who he would never see again. The next step would be coming out to an adult who he sees all the time, which is why he had chosen her. However, Ozzie asks Leia to feel her grandmother so he can tell if she is the right person to tell.
Nate is excited to see the jacuzzi, but Jay is not feeling very good because of what had happened with Leia. An older woman walks out of her house, and tells them she wants to see the bathtub gone, but tells them to try it out first. She hops into the tub with them and starts touching her feet.
Red tells Kitty that their computer had turned on unexpectedly, so he unplugs it. Leia tells Kitty that she wants to talk about her friend; which Kitty misinterprets as Leia wanting to talk about herself. However, her granddaughter tells her that she wants to talk about something that is a big deal because once it is done, they cannot go back. Kitty tells her not to worry about it because she is ready to talk whenever, saying she is very cool. However, after she is done talking to Leia, Kitty calls Donna and tells her that her daughter was about to have sex.
Gwen and Nik sit next to each other, saying that they never hang out on their own. Gwen says that she prefers other people, which Nik agrees with, but she says that she does not like that Nate went for the hot tub. When Nik asks if they want to do something, Gwen says that they have nothing in common, but they smoke weed and have a good time together.
Kitty is very excited when Ozzie tells her about finally going online. Ozzie tells her that he wants to tell her something. Kitty wonders if he is okay, but as he is about to tell her, Donna bursts through the door wondering where her daughter is. Leia wonders what is happening, as Donna asks her if Ozzie is her "sex boy", which confuses them both. Donna tells Leia that she got her condoms, but Leia tells her that she is not having sex, but in order to help keep Ozzie's secret, she says that she is having urges. Donna tells her that they need to have a sex talk.
Nik and Gwen talk about what to do now, so they dress up and take pictures together, which Nik says is something she believes would be cool to do wuth her.
Leia tells Donna that she is not comfortable with the sex talk beacause even though she did like a boy, she has not even kissed him yet and has not told him how she feels. Donna tells her that her dad was the same, but no matter how many times he had messed up, they always ended up back together.
Jay tells the older woman that he feels lost, to which Marion responds that she went through the same thing when she lost her husband. Nate says that she had basically told him the same thing except for the dead husband, as a girl walks out and yells at her grandmother for having tricked more guys into her hot tub. Marion tells them that she also has a king-size bed upstairs if they wanted to try it out as well, but they get out of the bathtub and the girl flirts with Nathan.
Leia tells Ozzie that she is sorry his moment had been ruined, but he thanks her for having covered for him. Donna tells Leia that she would be going home and apologizes to both Ozzie and her daughter.
Later, Ozzie helps Kitty set up her email, which she is very excited to do, even mentioning that getting her first mail was as exciting as having kids. Ozzie tells her that the email is from him and she has a hard time opening it, even restarting the computer. Ozzie cannot take it anymore and tells Kitty he is gay, even having a boyfriend in Canada. Kitty says that she is not sure how to feel because her friend married a Canadian, who stole her car. However, she does not care that he is gay, and hugs him, asking if that was the only reason he had helped with the computer.
Nik and Gwen run into each other at a coffee shop, both admitting they had had fun and agreeing to pretend it had never happened. At their table, Nate tells Nik that he got the goat because it was free, while Ozzie tells Gwen and Leia that step seven would now be to tell his pediatrician. Jay walks in, so Leia asks herself how long she had to keep the friend thing going. Ozzie tells her that if he could come out to her grandmother, then she can tell the guy who knows she likes him that she likes him.
Leia stands up from the table and walks over to Jay, about to tell him, but the girl from the hot tub, Serena, walks in. She tells Jay about Nate's goat and how they have a nice story for their first date. Leia gets nervous when this happens.
At night, Kitty finds Red using the computer, and discovers him seeing Raquel Welch. However, she is very happy that he is using the new computer and tells him to look for Kirk Douglas, but she restarts the computer.
